Going to take a couple of days and spend them up in Dearborn. We bought a family membership for the year, so we can go again later in the season. It was this or Cedar Point, and since no one in my family likes roller coasters, my wife & I chose The Henry Ford. I hope my kids like it. My 13 year old son wants to be an engineer, and my 16 year old daughter loves the Greenfield Village area.

I took my sons (10&17) there last month. We were visiting from out of town so we tried cramming everything in all in one day. We did the Henry, the factory tour and Greenfield Village. That was really too much for one day. It would work better to split them up.

I enjoyed the factory tour. They have a short movie and then a sort of live performance thing with a robot and model F150 as part of the factory tour. I think my kids were kind of bored by the factory though. I was disappointed that the tour didn’t include stamping and the body shop though.

The Rouge Complex has an amazing history to it. It is really one of the great Marvels of Americana.

If you are expecting the Henry to be an epic car museum you will be a bit disappointed. It certainly has some very historic cars, but the cars there are really part of a history lesson than pure lust worthy show pieces. There is a number of exhibits unlike I have seen in other museums though. They have a equipment, furniture, planes, firearms, tools, and a really extensive collection of electrical generation equipment. Some of the electrical stuff is absolutely massive and is cool for the scale alone.

Reasonably priced food (by attraction standards at least) also.

We really ran out of time for Greenfield Village. We spent maybe an hour but you probably need half a day to take it in. I was told there is a spot somewhere in the village that you can see over the brick wall along the entrance road and see Ford’s test track.

If you are close enough to visit several times, I’d say you made a good decisio with a membership.

I grew up pretty close and have spent entirely too much time there. The Allegheny locomotive is a big part of the reason I’m an engineer today! The round house in the village is awesome, too. And there’s an old machine shop you can tour in the village. I love to see the differences and similarities to modern machining. Very cool place.

Weirdly, the only cars I remember from the museum are the Wienermobile and the first (?) Honda in America.

The factory tour was really cool, though. I went when they were making previous-gen F150s and Lincoln whatevers.
